About the Shelf Life Calculator

Shelf life is the period a product stays safe and at its best under stated storage conditions. The printed date on a package is the final authority, but when you need to plan stock, or track an item after opening, calculating the date from a start date and a shelf life is useful.

Enter the date the product was made or opened, then the shelf life value and unit. The expiry date appears with the days left from today, or the number of days it has been expired.

FAQ

Shelf Life Calculator — frequently asked

What is the difference between use by and best before?

Use by is a safety date for perishable foods, and the food should not be eaten after it. Best before indicates quality, and the product is often still safe after it, though it may taste or look different.

How long do opened foods last?

It depends on the product. Many opened sauces and condiments last weeks in the fridge, while cooked leftovers usually last three to four days. Follow the label, which often gives a 'once opened' period.

Does month arithmetic handle short months?

Yes. Adding one month to 31 January gives 28 or 29 February, not 3 March. This avoids skipping over the end of a short month.

Should I trust a calculated date over the label?

No. Use the calculated date only when the label is missing or unreadable, or when you are tracking an opened item. The manufacturer's storage advice always takes priority.

Why do I need a date for when the product was made?

Shelf life is measured from production, so the start date should be the production or packing date printed on the product, if it is shown. For opened items, use the date you opened it.

Is my inventory stored?

No. The dates are calculated in your browser and nothing is saved.
