About the Favicon Generator

A favicon is the small icon browsers show in tabs, bookmarks and history. Other platforms ask for their own sizes: iOS uses a 180 pixel apple-touch-icon for home screen shortcuts, and Android web apps use 192 and 512 pixel icons listed in the manifest. Making each size by hand in an editor is tedious.

The generator takes a square image, crops the centre if the source is not square, and draws each size with high-quality smoothing. The HTML link tags below the results cover the most common needs, so you can paste them into the head of your page.

Keep the design simple. At 16 pixels, fine lines and small text disappear, so a bold single shape or an initial reads best. Check the icon on both light and dark browser tabs before you publish it.

FAQ

Favicon Generator — frequently asked

Which favicon sizes do I actually need?

Modern browsers use 16 and 32 pixel PNGs for tabs and bookmarks. Apple devices use the 180 pixel apple-touch-icon. Android web apps use the 192 and 512 pixel icons listed in the web manifest. The 48 pixel size covers Windows shortcuts and some high-density displays, so it is included too.

Do I need a favicon.ico file?

Not always. Current browsers accept PNG icons declared with link tags. Some older clients still request /favicon.ico at the root path, so if you need one, convert the 32 pixel PNG to ICO with a separate tool. This generator outputs PNG files only.

What image should I upload?

Use a square image, ideally at least 512 by 512 pixels, with a transparent or single-colour background. Non-square images are cropped from the centre, so keep the important shape in the middle. A vector logo exported as a large PNG gives the cleanest small icons.

Why does my icon look blurry at 16 pixels?

Very small sizes cannot show thin details. Use a simpler mark with thicker strokes and fewer colours, or design a separate 16 pixel version. The generator resamples from your source, so a low-resolution upload will look soft at every size.

Where should I put the icon files?

Place the PNG files in the root of your website or in your static assets folder, then add the link tags to the head of each page. Adjust the href paths if the files live in a subfolder. Put the 192 and 512 pixel icons into your site.webmanifest file as well.

Are my logo files uploaded?

No. The image is drawn onto canvases in your browser and the ZIP is built locally. Nothing is sent to a server, which matters for logos that are not yet public.
