About the Swim Pace Calculator

Swimmers measure pace in time per 100 metres, the standard unit in coaching and race results. Dividing total time by distance, then scaling to 100 metres, gives a figure you can compare across workouts, pools and races.

Enter minutes, seconds and the distance you covered. The calculator shows your pace per 100 and 50 metres, your average speed in kilometres per hour, and how many lengths of a 25 metre pool the distance equals. Use the same course length for every session so your trends are meaningful.

FAQ

Swim Pace Calculator — frequently asked

What is a good pace per 100 metres?

Recreational adults often swim 100 metres in around 2 minutes to 2 minutes 30 seconds, while competitive swimmers may be under a minute and a half for freestyle at a sprint. Progress over time matters more than comparing with others.

Why measure pace per 100 metres?

It is the standard unit used in swim training sets and race splits. It lets you compare a 400 metre workout with a 1500 metre swim on the same scale.

Does this work for open water?

Yes, but open water courses are often measured by GPS, which is less exact than a pool. Sighting, currents and turns mean open-water pace is usually slower than pool pace at the same effort.

How do I count pool laps?

A 25 metre pool requires 40 lengths to cover 1,000 metres, and a 50 metre pool needs 20 lengths for the same distance. Count each length as one, and turns at the wall count as part of the lap.

Why is my pace different in different pools?

Short-course and long-course pools, heating and lane traffic all affect your speed. Compare sessions in the same pool when tracking progress.

Is my swim data stored?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing is saved.
