About the Ideal Weight Calculator

There is no single ideal weight. Two common approaches give a useful range: the Devine formula, developed for drug dosing, which starts at 50 kilograms for men and 45.5 for women and adds 2.3 kilograms for each inch over five feet, and the healthy range on the body mass index scale.

Treat the outputs as reference points. Muscle mass, frame size, age and fitness all change what a healthy weight looks like for you, so a doctor or dietitian can give a better target if you need one.

FAQ

Ideal Weight Calculator — frequently asked

What is the Devine formula?

Devine (1974) estimated ideal body weight for drug dosing: 50 kg plus 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet for men, and 45.5 kg plus the same increment for women. It is widely used in clinical settings because it is simple and consistent.

What is the healthy BMI range?

A BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 is the range the World Health Organization classifies as healthy for most adults. The calculator converts that range into kilograms for your height, so you can see the weights that fall inside it.

Why do the two numbers differ?

The Devine formula gives one point estimate, while the BMI range gives a band. Both depend on height, but the formula also depends on sex in a fixed way. Neither accounts for muscle or frame, so they are approximations.

Does BMI work for athletes?

Not well. Muscle is denser than fat, so muscular people can have a BMI above 25 while being lean. Use body fat measurements or waist size alongside BMI in that case.

Is the formula valid for short or tall people?

The Devine formula is intended for adults around or above five feet. Below that height, the result is approximate and the BMI range is more reliable.
