How accurate is the tape method?
It is reasonable for tracking change but less accurate for a single reading. Typical error is a few percentage points compared with DEXA scans. Measure the same way each time, and compare results over several weeks.

Body fat percentage describes how much of your weight is fat tissue, which tells you more about body composition than weight alone. The US Navy method estimates it from circumferences: neck and waist for men, plus hip for women, together with height.
Measure in centimetres at the same time of day, with the tape level and snug but not compressing the skin. The result is an estimate with a typical error of several percentage points, so use it to track trends over weeks rather than to judge one reading.

Waist is measured at the navel for the Navy method, and neck just below the larynx, sloping slightly down toward the front. Hip is measured at the widest part of the buttocks for women. Breathe out normally before reading.
For men, essential fat is below 6 percent, athletes 6 to 13, fitness 14 to 17, average 18 to 24, and 25 or more is in the obese range. For women, essential fat is below 14, athletes 14 to 20, fitness 21 to 24, average 25 to 31, and 32 or more is obese.
Women store more fat around the hips and thighs, so the formula includes hip circumference. The men's formula uses only neck and waist.
Not necessarily. Very low body fat can affect hormones, bone density and energy. Essential fat is needed for normal body function, so aim for a healthy range rather than the lowest possible number.
