About the Descriptive Statistics Calculator

Descriptive statistics summarise a set of numbers. The mean is the arithmetic average, the median is the middle value that splits the data in half, and the mode is the value that appears most often. Together they show where the data sits, while the spread measures show how far values scatter around it.

Standard deviation is the usual measure of spread, but there are two versions. The sample version divides by n − 1 to estimate spread in a larger population from a sample. The population version divides by n and describes only the values you entered. The quartiles show the middle half of the data.

FAQ

Descriptive Statistics Calculator — frequently asked

Which standard deviation should I use?

Use the sample version when your numbers are a sample from a larger group you want to generalise about, and the population version when your numbers are the whole group. Most research and business data is treated as a sample.

Why is the median sometimes better than the mean?

The median is less affected by extreme values. In incomes or house prices with a few very large values, the median describes a typical value better than the mean.

How are quartiles calculated?

This calculator uses linear interpolation between sorted values, which matches Excel's PERCENTILE.INC. Other software may use slightly different rules, so small differences are normal.

What if no value repeats?

Then there is no mode, and the calculator says so. A set can also have several modes if more than one value appears equally often.

Can I paste numbers from a spreadsheet?

Yes. Commas, spaces, semicolons and new lines all separate values. Remove any text or units first, since the calculator only accepts numbers.

Is my data stored?

No. The numbers are processed in your browser and are not saved or sent.
